Privacy policy

Last updated

Best Digital Tools is operated by JackDoesDigital LLC, Murray, Utah, United States. This policy describes exactly what the site collects, because the site collects very little. It is written against what the code does, not from a template.

What this site is

We collect publicly available marketplace data, affiliate program terms, and search demand data about software and creator tools on a scheduled basis, store it as an append-only time series, and publish analysis of what changes. Most of the data on this site is about products, not about people.

What we collect from visitors

  • An anonymous per-visit session identifier, generated in memory when the page loads. It is not stored in a cookie and does not persist after you close the tab.
  • The landing page slug you arrived on, the page family (for example tool, comparison, report), the referrer, and a coarse device class such as mobile or desktop.
  • Affiliate link clicks, recorded with the page and the position on that page that produced the click.
  • Your email address, only if you voluntarily submit it to the subscribe form.

What we do not collect

This is the part most policies get wrong, so it is stated plainly:

  • We store no IP addresses.
  • We set no cookies for tracking, and no cookie is used to identify you across visits.
  • We store no user agent strings beyond the coarse device class described above.
  • We run no cross-site tracking and no advertising pixels.
  • We build no advertising profile, and we do not sell or rent any visitor data.

Why we collect it

The session identifier and page events tell us which pages are read and which links are used, so we know which parts of the dataset are worth maintaining. Affiliate click records let us attribute commission and measure our own earnings per click, which feeds the affiliate-facing Opportunity Score. Email addresses are used only to send what you subscribed to.

Who processes it

Three categories of third party are involved:

  • Our hosting and database platform, which runs the site and stores the data described above.
  • Our transactional email provider, which delivers subscriber email and operational alerts.
  • Affiliate networks, which receive your request when you click an affiliate link and are redirected to them. From that point their own privacy policies apply.

How long we keep it

Session and click events are stored as an append-only time series and retained for 24 months from capture and not kept beyond that period. That figure is held as a single configuration value that this policy and the deletion process both read, so the two cannot disagree. The automated deletion that enforces it is not yet running; until it is, we remove older events on request. Email addresses are retained until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them, at which point the address is removed.

Affiliate links and redirects

Outbound affiliate links pass through our own redirect so the click can be recorded and a sub-identifier naming the page and position can be appended. We earn a commission when a visitor buys through one of these links, at no additional cost to the visitor. Our buyer-facing Product Score contains no commission or earnings data of any kind — see /methodology/product-score.

Email and unsubscribing

Email is sent only to addresses submitted to the subscribe form. Every message includes an unsubscribe link, and you can also unsubscribe at /unsubscribe or by emailing jack@jackdoesdigital.com. Unsubscribing removes the address from the sending list.

Your rights

You can ask for access to any personal data we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted. Email jack@jackdoesdigital.com. Because we store no IP addresses and no persistent identifier, in practice the only personal data we are likely to hold is an email address you gave us.

Children

This site is not directed to children under 16 and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has submitted an email address, contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

When this policy changes, the last-updated date shown at the top of this page changes with it. Material changes will be described here rather than made silently.
